On Aug. 10, St. Louis events agency Brainchild Events will host the 9th annual Pins and Needles fashion design competition at The Majorette. This designer competition will feature emerging designers from across the country. The competition seeks to support the creativity, innovation and artistry of new designers by giving them the exposure, experience and tools they need to take their collections from runway to retail.

Participants will be invited to showcase their designs at the August event, with the winner receiving $15,000 in prizes, including a $1,000 cash prize from St. Louis Fashion Fund and other exposure to help launch successful careers in the fashion industry. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the runway comes to life at 7:30 p.m. Advanced tickets are available at brainchildevents.com starting Monday, June 25. General admission is $25, and VIP is $40.

Originally “Project:Design!,” the Pins and Needles competition was created in 2007 by Dwight Carter, creative director at Brainchild Events. Previous participants have gone on to participate in Project Runway, America’s Next Top Model and New York Fashion Week.

Unlike last year, when the show was opened by the former winner of the competition, the show will be opened by special guest Charles Smith II. Smith, a now resident of The Fashion Incubator, is a rising up and coming young designer originally from Harlem, New York. His diverse aesthetic vision is apparent in his luxury brand “Smith II” and his edgier ready-to-wear brand “S2 by Smith II,” a line for young fashionistas who are also influenced by fashion but still want to eat after acquiring it. Charles Smith’s transition from a player in the NBA D-League, to a model, and then to a designer showed him just how powerful following your dreams can be. He has walked in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York, Miami, Berlin, London, Paris, and Milan, experiences through which he saw one side of the industry. Living in Milan, Italy from 14 to 16 years of age and again from 19-21, Charles honed a European style through firsthand experience in the European fashion world. He has dressed fashion notables and celebrities such as Rev Run’s daughter Angela Simmons, Chris Brown’s ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran, and also Lenny Kravitz’s daughter Zoe Kravitz, just to name a few.

The six designers showcasing their looks in this year’s competition are:

  • Carl Mackey
  • Amanda Casarez
  • Raven B. Pulliam
  • Marcel Coleman Jr.
  • Kat Gaume
  • Hailey Washington

Partnering on this year’s event is The St. Louis Fashion Fund and KDR Showrooms. Event sponsors include SIBA, Max Magazine, Rock Uniform Lifestyle. A percentage of the proceeds from the event will go to SIBA. V
