Archbishop of Canterbury Advises Against Consecrating More Gay Bishops

Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the leader of the Anglican Church, has advised his colleagues within the Anglican Communion not to consecrate another gay bishop, according to the Washington Blade.

The U.S. Episcopal Church, which is a part of the Anglican Communion, consecrated the openly gay V. Gene Robinson as the bishop of New Hampshire in 2003.

Since then, the communion has been splintering, and more than 200 bishops boycotted this year’s Lambeth Conference, the once-in-a-decade gathering of Anglican leaders.

U.S. Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori encouraged the Anglican Communion to have patience with the ideological changes within the church.

In addition to forgoing the consecration of gay bishops, the Archbishop of Canterbury also asked his colleagues not to give their blessings to same-sex couples.
