Mass. Senate Votes to Repeal Law Barring Out-of-State Marriages

The Massachusetts Senate voted yesterday to repeal a law that bans out-of-state gay couples from marrying in Massachusetts, according to a GLAAD press release.

If the ban is lifted, more than 30,000 out-of-state couples are expected to wed in Massachusetts, which would generate more than $100 million for the state’s economy.

The 1913 law senators voted to repeal prohibits out-of-state couples coming from to Massachusetts if their union would be illegal in their home state, according to the release. The law had been seldom invoked until 2004 when former Gov. Mitt Romney ordered mandatory compliance after same-sex marriage became legal in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill later this week.
