African American Leaders Praising Obama on Marriage Equality

Rev. Jesse Jackson joined other African American leaders over the weekend in praising President Obama’s decision to support marriage equality, comparing the fight for marriage equality to the African-American fight against slavery and laws restricting interracial marriage.

 

President Obama Supports Full Marriage Equality

WASHINGTON, DC  – In an interview today (May 9) with ABC News, President Barack Obama voiced his strong support for full marriage equality for gay and lesbian Americans. Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese released the following statement in response to the President’s remarks:

North Carolina has passed Amendment One. With 59% of the vote - and most of the major support coming overwhelmingly from rural areas, the amendment strikes down same-sex marriage - and also voids most domestic unions. The amendment defines marriage as “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.”
