JCPenney continues to endear itself to its LGBT customers with a Father’s Day ad featuring a same-sex couple.
The ad features two real-life dads, Todd Koch and Cooper Smith, playing with their children Claire and Mason.
"First Pals: What makes Dad so cool?" reads the ad's copy. "He's the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver - all rolled into one. Or two."
The ad comes after a seemingly failed attempt by the group One Million Moms (who in actuality have less than 50,000 fans on their Facebook page) to boycott JCPenney after the company selected Ellen DeGeneres as its new company spokesperson. JCPenney has been praised for not giving into the pressure the group has tried put on the company in the wake of this decision.
“We stand squarely behind Ellen as our spokesperson and that’s a great thing, because she shares the same values that we do in our company,” JCPenney CEO Roy Johnson said in a February 2012 statement. “Our company was founded 110 years ago on The Golden Rule, which is about treating people fair and square, just like if you treated yourself. And we think Ellen represents the values of our company and the values that we share.”
One Million Moms released a statement on May 31, condemning the actions of JCPenney to feature a same-sex couple in their ads.
“It is obvious that JCP would rather take sides than remain neutral in the culture war,” the statement says. “JCP will hear from the other side so they need to hear from us as well. Our persistence will pay off! One day we will answer for our actions or lack of them. We must remain diligent and stand up for Biblical values and truth. Scripture says multiple times that homosexuality is wrong, and God will not tolerate this sinful nature.”
