Review: The NJT’s, “Sirens”

Sirens was a hit at the 2010 Humana Festival of Plays in Louisville, KY, and Kathleen Sitzer announced that, to her knowledge, this presentation is its Midwest premiere. The story is intriguing, the cast is top-notch, and the director, Terry Martin, is creative; yet, there’s not much going on that a reasonably intelligent person who’s ever seen a Lifetime movie about male midlife crisis couldn’t predict.

NQOTP: Viva Las Vegas!

For the second or third winter since moving into our house, Tim has insisted that we go “somewhere warm” in February. Given the fact that I am only able to work part-time at the university and, as a result, get no paid leave of any sort, such a trip has proven to be…well, something of a challenge. This year, however, armed with all of the vacation time that he has been accruing since I was laid off, Tim did some serious digging for “someplace cheap to fly to” and a little warmer than St. Louis. After a lot of on-line searching, that place turned out to be Las Vegas.

Review: “Macbeth” @ The Rep

If Macbeth isn’t the most visually arresting show I’ve seen at the Rep, it comes close. The stylized playing space functions as battlefields, castles, and even provides a way for “Birnam Wood to come to Dunsinane.” Set designer Michael Ganio and Kenton Yeager who has plotted a brilliant lighting scheme deserve applause all by themselves. Rusty Wandall’s sound design is also especially notable for incidental music, war drums and other interesting effects.

“I was nauseous and tingly all over. I was either in love or I had smallpox.” -Woody Allen

February has never been one of my favorite months. I mean, the major winter holidays have passed and, at this point, all I really want is for it to be warm again. I’m sick of shoveling snow and doing the one-legged Watusi on icy sidewalks, causing back and neck injuries that I won’t feel for another two days.  And, personally, when I get cold it takes forever for me to warm up again. All I want to do is camp out in front of the fireplace and wait for someone to tell me it’s safe to go outside again.

Review: Stray Dog’s “Distracted”

“Jackie Kennedy said if you bungle raising your children, I don’t think anything else you do matters very much,” Sherry (Katie Puglisi) smugly tells “Mama” (Michelle Hand). The irony is that Sherry’s teenage daughter, Natalie, (Berklea Going) cuts herself to relieve stress and her son depends on Ritalin. Natalie herself has been through a dizzying array of “medications.”
